There are pros and cons for each type and there are many things to consider. Therefore, it pays to look at both sides of the issue. In respect to decision-making, much has to do with goals. Lovett rightly points out that one has to ask whether one is concerned about sustaining production at current levels or looking at potential (4). There is a tendency to think that conventional systems which are entrenched in high input levels--and produce high outputs--are simply not sustainable, at least not for the long haul (4). Yet, they bring promise to those who are starving. In fact, technology has created changes in respect to food distribution issues as well as farming ("Neil" 28). Today, more people can eat, but it may be at the expense of future survival. The use of the conventional approach does suggest that there are contemporary systems that have low inputs and this is something that has been sustainable for many years (Lovett 4). Some say that these systems have been going for some thousands of years (4). Hence, one is broached with the problem of what is contemporary and what is traditional. There seems to be some debate in respect to conventional fare and alternative arrangements. One may define, for arguments sake, the concepts to be that what is generally used in agriculture is conventional and what is not usually utilized in todays day and age as alternative. In a similar respect, alternative medicine is generally medicine that has been used for hundreds of years but not recognized by the established medical forces of today. A similar situation exists in agriculture where new methods are sometimes harmful and going back to the old way is seen as innovative.
