As we enter an age where many experts seem to believe that the American character is typified by a na?ve sense of exceptionalism, we, as a culture, continue to be mired in questions of what images are appropriate for us to see, and which are not. There is an everpresent notion that the culture of the United States is inherently conservative or morally centric in some unique way, and that the appropriateness of images must be determined in the context of this culture. Recent examples include Janet Jacksons Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction"; while to many Europeans, this was a non-issue, it caused a huge controversy in America as many felt some moral offense had been committed by the brief exposure of a human breast on live television. Heavy fines were levied against all involved, and a governmental body devoted to the censorship of aesthetics that violate the exceptionalist cultural notion of America (the FCC) stepped up to condemn broadcasters for allowing such a slip-up to happen. This is not an old debate, nor is it one that will be resolved anytime soon. Controversial images in our society still tend to be analyzed in terms of their appropriateness (and censored accordingly), as opposed to their inherent aesthetic worth. A prime example of this is the photograph "The Face of War" by Nina Berman.
