Native Americans differ both racially and culturally from those whose ancestors originated in Europe. Sometimes these differences are minute but other times
they are quite dramatic. They arose because these different peoples had been confronted since the earliest emergence of their peoples with different needs in terms of their survival.
Interestingly, there was variation as well both within European peoples and within Native American peoples. Neither group was completely homogenous. Their cultural diversity was reflected in different languages,
different lifeways, and different religions. These differences, differences both between and within European and Native American cultures, arose as a result of these peoples living in relative isolation for
much of their cultural development. Once these cultures came in contact, of course, the differences began to dissipate to a degree as each culture changed to reflect certain components
of the other. Even today, however, there are distinct differences in these peoples. These differences still result in misperceptions and disagreements about each peoples role in contemporary society.
The differences that characterized these people was no more apparent at any time than when certain representatives European origin made their way to
the Americas. The exact time of the earliest of these encounters is controversial to say the least. Most agree, however, that continued contact began in the sixteenth century.
Once Europeans migrated to the Americas not only did they encounter a diversity of peoples, lifeways and languages, they brought with
