Hamlet would make the transition from the comfortable stage to the imposing big screen. The earliest known production of Hamlet was a French silent film released in 1900, but
aficionados of the Bard have long proclaimed Laurence Oliviers 1947 Academy Award-winning production to be the quintessential cinematic interpretation of Hamlet. However, Olivier basically transferred the stage play onto
film, meaning he did not enhance the production in any way by performing any feats of screen magic. Seeing Oliviers film is basically like attending a theatrical performance of
Hamlet. But actor and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh had other ideas. A lifelong student of Shakespearean drama, Branagh wanted to capture the essence of the tragedy, while at the
same time he wanted to make the film more accessible to contemporary audiences. Branagh had no interest in changing Shakespeare; he merely endeavored to utilize the tools of cinema
to provide a more visual interpretation of the drama. Shakespeare had conceived of Hamlet as a five-act play of steadily rising melodrama, with a series of mini-climaxes before reaching the
