yourself on a daily basis people will start losing trust in you" (Setty, 2006). But, according to Ralph Waldo Emerson this is not necessarily the case and a person must
always be passionate and true to themselves, regardless of any perception of contradiction or inconsistency. The following paper examines how Emerson justifies this. Contradiction and Inconsistency: Emerson
It is perhaps important and informative to first note one critics understanding of Emerson and contradiction. "Emerson was not bothered by self-contradiction, since he knew
he contained endless multitudes: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" (Bloom, 2003). Emerson notes that people are afraid to contradict themselves, to be inconsistent, and that this
fear goes back in time in the persons life or history. They feel they must always be the way they are and then he asks, "Suppose you do contradict yourself-so
what?" He then illustrates that most people believe that they should not merely rely on only their memory and that one should
perhaps always live in a new day, unafraid of changing their ideals, their perceptions of those ideals, and thus perhaps appearing to contradict themselves.
This also plays strongly into being inconsistent and he associates some need to be consistent with an inability to truly break free: "You say the kingdom of God
is within you. Yet when the divinity of your soul tries to emerge, you strangle it rather than let it breathe shape and color so that you may clothe God.
