hospital was run in such a way as to allow certain hospital procedures to go unnoticed. That is, when a patient goes into a hospital, they expect that there is
enough quality control, and an adequate staff, to make sure that such unlikely events never occur. While mistakes may be made within hospitals, minimizing those mistakes and making sure
that nothing untoward occurs during a hospitals stay is the least a patient can hope for. To that end, the idea of continuous quality of care has been developed. Continuous
quality improvement or CQI is "an approach to improving quality on a continuing basis" (Pozgar & Santucci, 2006, p. 455). It is something that has been introduced as a method
to reduce problems such as malpractice (Pozgar & Santucci, 2006). CQI is a philosophy that is attached to Demings management approach (Pozgar & Santucci, 2006). In respect to CQI,
there should be a commitment to leadership and this is particularly true where high-risk areas are identified (Pozgar & Santucci, 2006). Risk management is thought to be a component of
CQI. Some identified hospital risks where CQI could be relevant is in respect to delays in responding to fetal distress, slow responsiveness to patients with certain injuries and missed diagnoses
of certain conditions such as appendicitis or meningitis (Dansby, Kavaler & Spiegel, 2003). It is true that certain conditions are often missed when a patient presents in the emergency room.
The patient appears to be fine on discharge, but new symptoms arise after the initial visit and these are indicative of more severe injury or illness. When a patient goes
