to continue their education on a periodic basis. Licenses and certifications are renewed but not without proof that the individual has successfully complete a specific number of continuing education units
Queeney points out that continuing professional education has been recognized as a need since the 1960s (DATE). Queeney also points out that continuing professional education (CPE) is a big
business but it is not achieving the appropriate goals (DATE). There are three components related to preparation for professionals: 1.) knowledge of the information in the profession; 2.) skills, which
is the ability to use the knowledge to do certain things; and 3.) performance ability, or the ability to practice the knowledge and skills within the practice of the profession
(Queeney, DATE). The first two of these areas have been addressed satisfactorily but the third, which related directly to professional competence, has not (Queeney, DATE). This area has been neglected
in continuing professional education as well as in many preparatory college programs (Queeney, DATE). Many individuals have a firm grasp of the knowledge required and they may even be able
to demonstrate an ability to apply the knowledge in their jobs but competence is another story altogether (Queeney, DATE). Competence has to do with the ability to deal successful with
situations and conditions that come up in the practice of ones job that are not typical, that are part of standard practice. Queeney offers an example of certain airplane crashes,
