if only in a limited fashion. To facilitate this the use of disaster recover plans and risk analysis may be used. This is important for the future of the business.
A recent report stated that 96% of organisations who loose their main premises will report a trading loss in the following twelve months (Management Accounting, 1997). This is not an
encouraging statistic, but it is also a portent of the failure rate which follows a major disaster. Of those who suffered the loss of their main premises 70% never recovered
(Management Accounting, 1997). We first need to define what is meant by service. Service may be defined as work done for others. For the continuation of service to be
protected this means looking at the critical services that need to be protected and the services that the company need to receive to provide these services. This may include the
need to access customer record and the identification of "mission-critical sites" (Colraine 1998). Service may need to be limited to just able to communicate with the customers, but for some
industries, such as power, water and communications such as telephone there may need to be additional service provided for customers. These are also services that may be required to carry
on offering limited services to the customers. Now we need to look at protection and how these service may be protected. Protection may be seen as preservation. However, in
