and ploys, the things that Party does to dominate Other" (Pruitt et al, 2003, p. 63). With the one exception of violence, contentious
tactics are not "inherently destructive or baleful" (Pruitt et al, 2003, p. 63), however, they do have a specific role to play and can be considered several steps above how
a typical society outside of military life would interact. This is precisely why contentious tactics are warranted in this specific environment: The Army must protect its country at all
costs and therefore has the justification to utilize tactics that would otherwise be unacceptable in a civilized society. Contentious tactics are categorized into two distinct areas - light and heavy
- that define the seriousness of each one. A neutral or beneficial outcome are classified as light tactics inasmuch as these approaches incur the least amount of discomfort and
can even mean a positive result to the Other. Heavy tactics, on the other hand, leave little in the way of subtlety in their more intense application; the hostile
