While it remains a classic piece of Western literature that continues to be required reading for the majority of twentieth-century students, the question that immediately springs to mind is: Can a text that was written almost 3,000 years ago have any type of contemporary significance or relevance? It is, after all, a tale replete with gods and goddesses and a heroic protagonist named Achilles (or Achilleus) who was actually the product of the mortal Peleus and the goddess Thetis. Achilles was a warrior of mythical stature, and the invincible shield he wore into battle practically ensured victory for the Achaians. The poem transformed "the story of Achilles and Hector, among other Greek and Trojan heroes, [became] a didactic myth which eventually became an instructive tool for the values of heroism to be emulated by Greek young men hundreds of years after the war took place" (Leadbeater). But "The Iliad" is much more than a glorification of combat and the ancient gladiators who fought it. This poem is an unflinching representation of the exacting cost of war, and what the countries and people who wage it must pay in order to emerge triumphant. For Americans of all ages, the world changed forever on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, when Osama bin Ladens al-Qaeda terrorist network invaded what had once seemed to be impenetrable barriers. On that day, the people of the United States understood what it meant to have senseless bloodshed spilled on their shores. Images of human carnage - of innocent men, women, and children being burned beyond recognition - were flashed across TV screens all over the world. Suddenly, the Trojan War and all of the horrors that Homer wrote about in insightful verse was becoming an all-too-commonplace reality ...
