These theorists provide a basis for understanding the problems facing adult learner populations and the learning process related to adult literacy programming. Description of the Learning
Example The learning example being assessed for this study is one of a population of adult learners in a basic education program focusing on literacy. This learning example was
selected because it provides a basis for assessing learning theories in an adult learner population and also allows for the application of the theories of educational specialists like Lave and
Wenger, who recognized the connection between experiential learning processes and positive outcomes for individuals in the workplace setting. The integration of a learning environment that is workplace-based, then, is
central to this learner population, as is the contextualization of the learning process. The learning taking place is a literacy education in the workplace, designed to enhance employee performance through
educational improvements. As a result, the learning in this model is formal, but is also contextualized. Instructional models incorporate an application process through which employees demonstrate improvements in
functional literacy in the workplace. The learning process, then, is conscious and applicable, and can be understood relative to the formal instructional model of adult basic education. Because
of the relationship between the educational model and the workplace setting, the learning concepts applied and the psychology of learning relate both an information and transformative learning concept. The
informative/transformative learning concept relates to an understanding and a contextualization of the experiences of adults as both educators and learners. In the workplace setting, an understanding of the learning
