had failed use to bring about lasting peace. The European union has been a great success in bringing about this peace, this has been demonstrated by the recent adoption of
the single European currency by twelve member states. However, there are other aspects of the European Union that are more controversial. This may be seen as the role the EU
plays in the globalisation of trade and industry, and how it may be seen to influence, or to attempt to influence the way globalisation occurs and its effects though
the law. If we look at globalisation there are many ways in which the Union could influence the effect of globalisation, these may be seen as both positive and
negative. Globalisation has also been encouraged and simplified by different trading groups which aim to reduce barriers to international trade by reducing trade tariffs and promoting free trade. Organisations such
as the European Union, the World Trade Organisation (WTO), NAFTA and AFTA (Gunalan, 1999). The perceived success has been so great that China now wishes to be included in
an organisation it see as capitalist, and is currently petitioning to join the World Trade Organisation (Bernama, 1999). Therefore, the advent of the trade association makes globalisation more effective,
they encourage international trade, bring down trade barrier to make it easier for countries to sell their ware abroad. Global strategies also
