Contemporary archaeology has been shaped by numerous factors. At one time archaeology was a largely intuitive field,
a field shaped by emotion and personal belief. Over time, however, archaeology has moved towards a more scientific approach. This is evidenced by a definitive evolution in theory,
research methodology, and even goals. Archaeology actually has its roots in the desire to unearth ancient riches and evidence to support various beliefs,
myths, and even religion. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in particular so-called archaeologists were traversing the world trying to locate ancient cities and civilizations. Many of the
expeditions that arose were fueled by the desire to find the civilizations described in the Christian Bible. Jerusalem, for example, has been a focal point of archaeology since its
inception. The city is a holy place for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. During her heyday Jerusalem was the largest
Holy Sanctuary of the world, hosting hundreds of thousands of people during the important religious holidays. Unfortunately, history has wielded a heavy hand on Jerusalem, especially in regard to
