Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. The American farmer once represented the very backbone upon which this country flourished; through farmers' laborious efforts, the nation's economic, social and political stature grew sturdier and more steadfast as a solvent provider. As the years passed and other food options presented themselves from outside the United States, however, consumers began to realize the vastness of their choices and readily funneled their money to a combination of out-of-state and out-of-country farmers, a move that has caused the steady decline of Nebraska's own market. At issue is the fact that consumers do not realize the detrimental impact such purchasing choices have upon the local economy and how, if buying habits are not changed, will ultimately cost Nebraska farmers their very livelihood. Hawaii in the dead of winter or out-of-season strawberries from as far away as Mexico. Because these commodities are typically sold through one or more of the most prolific
global food and beverage companies, there is simply no way for local Nebraska farmers to compete with the economic backing these multinational conglomerates, leaving them without a market - local
or otherwise - who will buy their food. A number of environmental issues play an integral role with regard to the impact of shipping global food as opposed to purchasing
locally grown provisions, as well. The extent of resources required to move produce and other edible commodities from one corner of the world to another is both grand and
far-reaching; that fossil fuels and road construction are paramount to transporting food from point A to point B means the continued assault of air and land pollutants. Moreover, food
quality is greatly impacted by virtue of the time it takes to bring food into the United States and finally into the consumers hands, at which point it has lost
