sense of course, refers to the offering of a good or service in exchange for financial compensation. In other words, the primary pillar of the countrys economy is the unilateral
transmission and flow of consumption. This being the case, it is often instructive to examine the impact that consumption has as a sociological force. One of the most intriguing ways
in which consumption manifests sociologically is in the preponderance of social rituals that are tied to money and consumerism. Obvious examples include holiday rituals such as Christmas, which is so
central to the consumerist economy of the United States that most businesses count on Christmas as a primary determinant of whether or not any profits will be generated in a
given fiscal year. However, Christmas and other such holidays are atypical as purely consumptive rituals because they do have at least some historical tradition tied to sociological aspects outside of
consumption, such as religion. For this reason, one can perhaps understand the connection between ritual and consumption in the United States better if one seeks out those rituals which are
widespread but entirely socially constructed rather than traditionally inherited; opportunities to spend and consume that ultimately exist for little other reason than because we, as a society, will them to
be. The Super Bowl, the championship game of the National Football League, is a prime example of this. This paper will explore the relationship that rituals such as the Super
