Yet, there are other things that people seem to learn in the course of their daily lives. In some way, the human being is able to go beyond what is taught and this type of learning is found under the theory of constructivism. A major theme in Bruners constructivism is that learning is an active process where learners construct new concepts or ideas which are based on current or past knowledge ("Constructivist," 2003). The learner will both select and transform information and construct hypotheses, and also make decisions, while relying on a cognitive structure (2003). A cognitive structure such as a schema, does provide some meaning and organization to experiences and that also allows an individual to simply go beyond the information for which they are provided (2003). In more recent publications, Bruner had expanded his theory to include the social and cultural ways of learning (2003). Bruners constructivist theory is a framework for instruction that is based upon the study of cognition and a good deal of the theory is related to child development research, with particular emphasis on Piaget ("Constructivist," 2003). Ideas to come from Bruner originated from a conference that focused on science and math learning but Bruner illustrated his theory in the context of mathematics as well as social science programs for young children (2003).
