The capitalistic principles of this country and the conspicuous consumption that goes along with those premises can, in some cases, be a direct affront to the teachings of Christianity and to morality in general. From a Christian perspective, of course, wealth is not necessarily evil. Wealth, after all, can be a positive factor in charity. The more an individual has the more they can give. Proverbs 13:4, in fact, tells us that "The soul of the sluggard desireth and has nothing but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat". In Proverbs 13:11 we read "Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase". At the same time we must take heed that when work takes precedence over all other aspects of our life, when we transgress from diligent workers to workaholics, that too is a form of idolatry. In too many cases in modern society wealth goes hand in hand with vanity and unfortunately has perpetuated the idolatry of things. Whether these things are name brand clothing or Lamberhinis or expensive jewelry, idolatry is not condoned by Biblical teachings. While in our society we have the right to eat, wear, and live in anything that we can afford, to do so is not always morally sound. Unfortunately, our society is perpetuated by the very aspects of wealth that runs counter to Biblical teachings. When we consider the very rich in American society, people like Bill Gates, Donald Trump, actors and actresses, and professional athletes, we often think of them in light of their material possessions.
