surgery and how it has become a mainstream medical procedures, despite its risks and despite the fact that many people have spoken out against it: "Cosmetic surgery stands ... as
the ultimate invasion of the human body for the sake of physical beauty" (Gimlin, 2004, p. 95). Gimlin details some of the popular procedures, including liposuction and breast augmentation, and
the difficulties that ensue when these procedures go wrong. The question that Gimlin seeks to answer is why, when there is such risk, expense and (often) condemnation, women still undergo
major surgery for the sake of their physical appearance. She notes that most of the criticism is either at the "grand level of cultural discourse" or responding only to physiological
effect (Gimlin, 2004, p. 95). These debates overlook the opinions of the women who have plastic surgery, and it is these women that Gimlin discusses. She notes that many women
who have plastic surgery are greatly pleased with the results. The surgery doesnt make them look like movie stars, but its not intended to reproduce an "unattainable ideal" but to
correct a specific "flaw" (Gimlin, 2004, p. 95). Insofar as it does that, it is successful. She also notes that different types of women have different surgeries: many women have
their breasts enlarged, while Oriental women may have their eyes reshaped, and Jewish and Italian women have rhinoplasty (nose surgery) (Gimlin, 2004, p. 95). The women who have breast surgery
are trying to meet an ideal of beauty based on mens definition of feminine beauty; likewise the women who are having their eyes or noses reshaped are succumbing to ethnic
