controversy and misunderstandings. This research, however, holds the secrets to the solutions to some of the most perplexing problems confronting modern medicine. It has the potential to impact
the face of medicine across all cultures and across all geographic boundaries. Stem cell research thus has the potential to benefit humanity as a whole. To realize these
benefits, however, we must somehow overcome the ethical objections that exist in regard to the research. Stem cells are unique because they have
the potential of developing into any type of cell. They have the potential to either remain a generalized cell or to take on specialized function. The applications of
stem cell research include improved treatment in such difficult and debilitating conditions as heart disease, cancer, Parkinsons disease and, in fact, an untold number of other potential applications. Stem
cell research has recently even offered promise in being able to restore sight in those with photoreceptor loss (Review of Optometry, 2006). Researchers
have previously thought that while peripheral blood stem cell, bone marrow, and umbilical cord stem cells are certainly useful, the most impressive of all the possibilities were fetal stem cells.
Because fetal stem cells are collected from fetuses at a specific time during their development, they have the potential to grow and to actually regenerate damaged neural connections.
Fetal stem cells can, in fact, differentiate into all of the 210 types of human tissue which exists. Much of the controversy surrounding stem cell research, however, lies with
the fact that the most valuable stem cells must be harvested from human embryos. Fortunately, considerable effort is being expended identifying
