tremendous aid. Poverty, substance abuse, and violence are only some of the problems that are encountered on a frequent basis in the profession. Social workers often find themselves
on the street addressing issues such as homelessness or prostitution. They often find themselves working among immigrant populations where even the simplest of situation can be greatly confounded by
cultural differences. Social workers deal with all types of people in all types of environments. Consequently, they must assess both
person and environment when deciding how to intervene in a difficult situation. As sociologists are well aware, both person and environment can vary according to a number of factors.
These factors include ethnicity, race, culture, socioeconomic background, and educational attainment. They also include such things as age and relative maturity. All of these factors impact social
role and the way individual interact with one another. Sometimes this interaction is healthy and positive but other times it is extremely deleterious.
Sociologist Erving Goffman suggested the interaction between people occurs as though they are producing a theatrical performance on a stage. In "The Presentation of Self in
Everyday Life" Goffman (1997) presents his theories of "dramaturgy". He explains human interactions as a theatrical performance, a performance complete with individual scripts, settings, and performances which make up
an individuals daily life. Interestingly, these scripts and the particulars of any one performance can change according to specific aspects of an individuals psychological maturity and with such aspects
