have been added to the federal endangered species list (Landers 12). To date, however, the Endangered Species Act, has had little bearing on the most pertinent impacts to salmon
populations since impacts of many of the activities which are causing their decline are grandfathered in to some extent (Baker). Consequently our native salmon population not only continues to
be depleted but native salmon as an economic food choice has become almost non-existent in comparison to days of old. While the environmental problems confronting our salmon resources are
difficult to address, the problem of making salmon available as a food choice is being addressed with the establishment of salmon farming techniques. That establishment, however, has resulted not
only in benefits but in certain negative impacts to the native salmon resource as well as to the environment as a whole. Since
the 1980s aquaculture has accounted for the fastest-growing supply of fish worldwide (Suzuki Foundation (1)). Aquaculture as a whole is viewed as a means of removing the pressure from:
"wild fish stocks, while addressing the growing imbalance between fish production and food requirements for
an expanding world population" (Suzuki Foundation (1)). . Salmon farming is a very
specific niche of this aquacultural revolution. Salmon farming is not really a completely new development, however. Scientist began experimenting with hatching Salmon eggs in 1838, in fact (Weber).
