regional strategy on deterrence? Mainly when dealing with Threats. U.S strategy in dealing with terrorist threats is, by nature, multifaceted. Certain regions
obviously have much more complex security needs. The levels of deterrence in these regions is significantly more than that that if found in other regions. Numerous events have
unfolded over the last decade that have been of tremendous importance to American society. By far the most important of those events, however, was the September 11, 2001 terrorist
destruction of the New York World Trade Center and the subsequent attack on the U.S. Pentagon itself. While higher levels of deterrence were in place for certain regions even
prior to this significant event, that is certainly more so the case today (Leahy, 2005). Critical areas like our nations capital, power plants, and military bases are characterized by
high levels of deterrence while more rural areas, for example, have very little in place in terms of deterrence. Not only does the structure of our nation have importance
in implementing regional deterrence, so too does the nature of terrorism itself. As MILNET (2006) emphasizes, known terrorist cells are scattered throughout the country.
