to harbor diseases that can inflict serious harm to human beings. Fortunately, this can be prevented by just obeying some simple rules when it comes to food selection, preparation
and storage. There are numerous things that must be considered in regard to food safety. First, it is always important
to know where the food you are purchasing comes from. A simple rule of thumb is that the more hands the food has to go through to reach its
ultimate destination, the more chance it has of being contaminated along the way. Food that is imported from less technologically advanced countries is of particular concern. Consider, for
example, the problems that we have recently witnessed in regard to salmonella contaminated produce that was imported from Mexico and the presence of melamine in food that was imported from
China. These recent events alone should convince us of the importance of knowing the origin of our food. When something like baby formula can be contaminated with such
a potentially hazardous chemical, it becomes apparent that practically anything could slip through the cracks of import law. The next rule of thumb
in regard to food safety is to always purchase food that provides proper nutrition. By law food must be labeled with the ingredients and other important dietary information.
Calorie content is not the only thing that you should be checking on the food labels. Sodium content is a particularly critical bit of information that can be found
on the label as is sugar content. Other important information is the percent of the national dietary requirements the food contains for important vitamins and minerals. Fat content
