energy to survive sociologically. Energy might be defined as the ability to do work. From a biological perspective we get our energy from the food that we eat.
Sociologically, however, energy is a different type of beast. Typically when we think of energy from a sociological perspective we think of petroleum products and electricity. In
reality there are many different types of energy. Some are renewable but others are not. Indeed, energy can be categorized into two
distinct classifications, carbon based energy sources and non-carbon based energy sources. Petroleum products of course belong to the first category and sources of energy such as solar energy belong
to the second. Petroleum products, i.e. things such as gasoline, diesel, and even natural gas are all non-renewable types of energy. While the earth holds vast reserves of
this type of energy, eventually those reserves will be exhausted. Because they took millions of years to establish, they are considered non-renewable energy sources.
Table 1 illustrates carbon based energy products alongside alternative forms of energy. Renewable energy is significantly different than non-renewable energy. Renewable energy sources can
take a variety of forms but ethanol, alcohol produced from plants is one example of a renewable energy source. Equally valuable energy sources are things such as solar energy,
wind energy, geothermal, and hydroelectric. This latter type of energy source is how we create electricity. Many power plants, however,
are coal fired and thus not as preferable as hydroelectric power facilities. Where coal fired plants use the energy from burning coal to produce eelectricity, hydroelectric power plants derive
