Blended family dynamics, those dynamics that occur when a mother and her children merge to form a family with a father and his children are even more complicated. That fact is well illustrated in the story of Cherise Oozel and Rick Miller. When Cherise and Rick married they blended Cherises twin sons and Ricks son and two daughters into one big happy family. Fortunately, Cherise and Rick did their homework before taking this big step. The two families spent a lot of time together getting to know one another and considering some of the big changes they would face with the merger. They even attended a step family support group. While they each believe that the measures that they took to make sure that their new family would be successful were critical in actually effecting that, they also each admit that the marriage did present situations and considerations that they never predicted. Each member of this new family, in fact, has certain issues that affect the family as a whole and them as individuals. Regardless of the steps we take to make them work, blended families raise problems regarding appropriate social roles. Individuals, after all, are not just autonomous psychological entities. Instead, they are individuals that are directly integrated into a larger emotional entity, the family. One effect this new family has on its individual members is a feeling of isolation from their other parent. The younger children in particular miss their biological parents.
