specifics of those variables, of course, varies according to the precise location and orientation of the rooftop and according to the design parameters that are incorporated into the garden.
This paper will explore the feasibility of growing, over the course of one year, a rooftop vegetable garden on the roof of a ten story apartment building near the World
Trade Center in downtown Portland Oregon. The benefits of rooftop gardening will be extolled as will the considerations that must be made to make this type of garden successful.
No city is more suitable for experimentation with rooftop gardening than Portland. The city is one of the most progressive in the
nation in terms of its concern for the environment and willingness to initiate unique ideas to lessen mans impact to that environment. The World Trade Center in Portland, and
the apartment building where our experiment will be conducted, is only feet away from one of the most scenic areas of the city. It is located on the Willamette
river right in the middle of the scenic waterfront area that makes Portland so attractive to its residents and, indeed, to visitors from around the world (Williams, 2000). From
the roof of our building and the trade center alike the peak of Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens are each clearly visible (Williams, 2000). When the observer turns
his or her gaze downward the biggest urban area in the state becomes visible (Williams, 2000). The city boasts a population in excess of 500,000 people (Crockett, 2001).
