to make notes as part of their professional conduct, and as such there are certain considerations which need to be made when making and retaining these notes. Considerations include why
to make notes, how they are made, even including the way that the process of taking notes may impact on the therapeutic relationship, the way in which they are going
to be used as well as legal aspects. The first consideration may be on why notes are made and how they are made. To look at this the first
stage is to define what a counsellor is, what they do. Burks and Stefflre (1979) define the counselling relationship between the client and a trained counsellor as one that is
usually undertaken on a person-to-person basis, but may be a relationship involves more than two people, and has the principal aim of helping clients "to understand and clarify their views
of their life-space, and to learn to reach their self-determined goals through meaningful, well-informed choices and through resolution of problems of an emotional or interpersonal nature".
This is supported by the universal qualities that should be found in all counsellors put forward by Pelling (et al, 2006), which states the counsellor should
be able to facilitates the clients growth in terms of self understanding, and also links the role of the counselling job to one that works towards empowerment and human liberation.
