Todays tremendously high energy prices once again deliver the cutting message that we must find alternative energy sources. This is not
only an economic necessity but also an environmental one. There is, however, no one best alternative. Instead the best approach is a combination of approaches. These approaches
must include an emphasis on conservation, ecological stability, and efficiency. Once this focus is achieved the world will undoubtedly be a very different place.
One of the most important steps that we can take in insuring our future is more positive is to modify our lifestyles so that we utilize less
energy. We must cut our energy consumption by electing such options as telecommuting, car pooling, and better insulating our houses. There are, of course, many other behavioral changes
that can enhance a focus on energy conservation and ecological preservation. The modification of our engines to be more efficient and the use of non-traditional energy sources such as
nuclear and solar power are just two of the steps that we can take. In terms of our energy choices we should look
not just to one energy source but rather towards a carefully selected group of renewable energy choices. Diversification insures energy optimization as well as provides a buffer from unexpected
outside political or other unexpected influences. Just as importantly, however, we must open ourselves to alternatives that may be poorly understood by the general public. Nuclear power is
an excellent example of such an alternative. So too are fuel cells. Of the two, the latter is of particular interest in that it has the potential to
