place and the way it is perceived. Overall, the fear of crime appears to be disproportionately high compared to the actual occurrence of crime. Ironically, it appears that one of
the key issue in the cause of the disproportionate perception is the role of the media, but it s education taking place through the media which may also be the
way that the disproportionate fears could be reduced. The overall impression that is given by the media is that crime rates are increasing. However, the Fear of Crime lecture
demonstrates that this is not the case, while in the past there have been increases in crime rates, the statistics from the Bureau of Criminal Justice, show that while the
rates for violent crime rates per 1,000 of the population increased between 1961 and 1991, but in 2001 it stated a downward trend. A similar patter is also seen with
property crime, with an increase between 1961 and 1981 with 1991 showing a slight decrease which has continued in the 2001 and 2009. The actual fear of crime is
much higher than the occurrence; and does not represent the reality. The fear of crime appears to be influenced by a number of factors, including socio-economic status and ethnic background;
for example, 40% of African Americans have a fear of being murdered while only 15% of the white population have the same fear. However, whole there are some differences,
there are also some similarities; the while and the African population appear to have the same levels of fear concerning sexual assault, burglary and vehicle theft. The information contained
