values and ideologies. In Europe Napoleon had promoted the liberal idea that people were citizens and that their voices should be heard. Obviously, this was not well-received by
those who stood the most to loose in terms of power. Politicians of the day had differing viewpoints on liberalism verses conservatism and many worked towards retaining the ways
of old rather than picking up arms to attain change. The British politician Edmund Burke, for example, feared revolutions believing that they had a tendency to give the people
a taste for violence and war, that the people would never be able to return to the stability they had prior to a revolution. Burke wrote:
"Corrupt influence takes away vigor from our arms, wisdom from our councils, and every shadow of authority from our
system of government." (Hansen, 1995). Burkes
attack of the French Revolution even inspired Thomas Paine to write "Rights of Man" in which he defended the Revolution and countered Burkes criticisms (Leemhuis, 2003). The "Rights of
Men" series was an analysis of the historical basis for the roots of European discontent (Leemhuis, 2003). In them Pain pointed the finger at "arbitrary government, poverty, illiteracy, unemployment
and war" alike as being responsible for the deep festering social problems characterizing Europe (Leemhuis, 2003). As would be expected, Paines
views were not welcomed with open arms by either Burke or much of the European political front because they criticized the monarchy. The "Rights of Man" publications were,
