The political philosophies of liberalism and conservatism are most often on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of views on key political issues. Providing a truly accurate definition of either term, however, is really an impossibility. While the dictionary does so, those definitions are tenuous at best. It seems that the definitions of these terms vary not just in accordance with who you ask but also with the social circumstances in which the question is broached and even by time. When we turn to the dictionary definition of liberalism, for example, we find the philosophy associated with: "free political institutions and religious toleration, as well as support for a strong role of government in regulating capitalism and constructing the welfare state" (Hirsch, Kett, and Trefil). Obviously, both liberalism and conservatism have evolved considerably over time. The contemporary liberal approach, for example, is considerably removed from that taken during its early years when the primary focus of liberals was freedom from regulation. It also varies considerably from the twentieth century definition quoted above. Regulation, of course, is typically implemented by government and today liberals seem to more often be calling for more government than they do less government. Liberals advocate government programs to address every human need. Critics contend that liberals verge on socialism in that they support welfare programs, government provided healthcare, government oversight in consumer affairs, and similar applications of taxpayer moneys.
