every bit as devastating to the American population and yet receive little or no national attention. These are crimes against the many species of wildlife that have taken refuge
throughout the United States. Poaching commonly refers to the illegal hunting or catching of game and fish, and poachers are difficult to catch because it is sometimes difficult to
distinguish them and licensed hunters and fishermen. According to Fisher (2002), "Wildlife poaching in the United States is more dangerous, more profitable, and harder to control than anywhere else
in the world" (p. 475). Illegal wildlife trafficking has become very big business in America. Law enforcement officers from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services (FWS) contend that
the United States is currently facing the worst poaching crisis in its history (Fisher, 2002). Poachers can be found anywhere from Alaskas Katmai National Park to the Eastern
Appalachian Trail stalking any type of endangered species whether they be bears, bald eagles, seals, turtles, timber wolves, any type of waterfowl - and believe it or not, "even beetles"
(Glick, 1990, p. 154). Longtime wildlife enforcement official Dave Hayes recalled when he was called in to investigate the poaching of Louisiana alligators, the population had been depleted nearly
90 percent because of an extremely lucrative skin trade (Speart, 1992). Alligator hunting had been outlawed in Louisiana since 1964, but that didnt deter poachers from making a literal
killing on the skins used to make shoes, belts, briefcases and apparel. Despite the best conservation efforts to save the U.S. black bear and alligator population from extinction, a
