100 years, "temperatures have risen by about 0.6[degrees]C. . . . and . . . global sea level has risen by about 20cm" (King 2004, p. 176; also see Journal
of Environmental Health 2001, p. 30). The results have been heat waves and flooding that has taken lives; a heat wave in France claimed 15,000 lives (King 176) and one
in Chicago caused 500 deaths (Journal of Environmental Health 30). Carbon dioxide levels are higher than at any time in history (King, 2004). It is projected that these levels will
cause temperatures to increase "by 1.0[degrees] to 4.5[degrees]C during the next century" (Journal of Environmental Health 2001, p. 30). Global warming is the crucial topic because it is has a
negative impact on everything associated with the environment. History demonstrates that America has not been much more neglectful of the environment than any other country. Expansion into uncharted territories is
a practice of all nations, e.g., the westward expansion and the post-World War II expansion accompanied by industrialism (Petulla, 2001). President Theodore Roosevelt adopted policies to protect land and conserve
natural resources as did President Franklin D. Roosevelt forty years later (Petulla, 2001). Conservation to preserve the environment is a political, economic and social issue as well as a philosophical
one. In past decades, the emphasis was placed on economic growth through industry, which included motor vehicles (Petulla, 2001). Expansion to the suburbs meant more roads and more businesses leading
