is a matter which author Brian Cooney takes to task in his book The Place of Mind. In this text, he reviews many opinions and theories of consciousness and
two which are of great interest are those of Thomas Nagel and David Chalmers. Consciousness Thomas Nagel wrote a paper,
which has since become rather famous, called What is it Like to be a Bat (Cooney, 1999)? Nagel maintains that there is really no credible theory on the mind-body
connection at all (Cooney, 1999). Furthermore, he suggests that all prior theories are too reductionist in nature to have any real merit and that they ignore vital information (Cooney,
1999). Nagel asserts that consciousness abounds in the animal world but a true marker of consciousness is indeed difficult to come by (Cooney, 1999).
Nagel sums up his theory of consciousness by basically saying that despite the organism, the very fact that the organism has a conscious experience indicates
that there is something it is like to be that organism (Cooney, 1999). In other words, consciousness is the result of being. He claims that reductionist theories are
not sound in this matter due to the inability to gather all necessary data prior to the reduction (Cooney, 1999). Without the correct input then, the reduction becomes meaningless.
Nagel stresses the importance of subjective features in What is it Like to be a Bat? He maintains that the experience of being a bat is
