the living experience of every sentient being. States of consciousness - such as sleeping, dreaming, hypnosis and meditation - bring one to an entirely different mental/spiritual place than when
one is conscious and fully awake; that these varied states of consciousness are so removed from wakeful awareness speaks to their respective abilities to replenish the minds eye when the
brain is otherwise unoccupied by daily stresses. Normal sleep patterns run in a four-step cycle, with Stage I being that of the hazy
transitional period between consciousness and sleep. This period lasts approximately ten minutes until Stage II commences, lasting another fifteen minutes or so. Stage III is recognizable by "high-amplitude
delta activity" (Murray, 1995, p. 303) that ultimately turns into Stage IV, which typically begins an hour and a half after the initial sleep pattern has begun. Existing experiments
have determined that physiological standards within the sleeping subject have "changed abruptly" (Murray, 1995, p. 303) in the forty-five minutes that follow the onset of Stage IV. Indications of
this are that the EEG reading is maladjusted and the eyes flit from one side to the other in a rapid fashion, which is indicative of REM sleep. If
one has reached Stage IV, it is indicative that one will shortly be entering the REM stage where dreaming occurs. One well accepted state of consciousness is that of meditation,
a fundamental basis towards reducing stress and encouraging healing. According to Kabat-Zinn (1995), meditation is instrumental in producing a state of "mindfulness" (Kabat-Zinn, 1995, p. PG), which instills a
strong sense of being rather than doing. Meditation helps one to focus upon the here and now, without being interrupted by thoughts of the past or future. Kabat-Zinn
