Golden State. This paper examines the cycles of conquest in California during the period 1769-1865. Spanish California The Spanish conquest of California seems to have been almost accidental, since, although there were English claims in the region, the English virtually ignored most of the Western part of the North American continent for some 200 years (Wikipedia). The Spanish for their part were fearful that "any conquest beyond the California peninsula [now Baja California] would set them in direct conflict with the English who were now sailing regularly into the Pacific" (Wikipedia). However, the Spanish became convinced that missions to covert the Indians could succeed, and in 1769 Father Junipero Serra founded the first of the famous California missions at San Diego de Alcal? (Wikipedia). Later in that same year, a small military force marched north out of San Diego with the intent of establishing missions throughout the territory; the commander was Gaspar de Portol? and with him and his soldiers went Fr. Serra (Wikipedia). The second mission, San Carlos Borromeo, was founded in 1770 in Monterey; Fr. Serra made his headquarters in Carmel, which is only a few miles up the coast (Wikipedia). From there, Father Serra continued founding missions throughout the state; the settlements were placed "one days journey (by foot or mule) apart along El Camino Real" (Wikipedia). Thus the Spanish influence in California came first with the missions, then with the secular settlements that followed soon after: "San Jose in 1777, Los Angeles in 1781, and Branciforte (Santa Cruz) in 1797" (Wikipedia).
