American Psychiatric Association (APA), indicates that 1 to 3 percent of adults suffer from ADHD and this condition frequently results in co-morbid psychiatric disorders, such as substance abuse (Taylor, Deb
and Unwin, 2011). As this indicates, adults ADHD is associated with lifelong negative consequences. To address the need of diagnosing ADHD in adults, several rating scales have been developed. The
following paper profiles the scale developed by Conners, Erhardt and Sparrow, the Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scales (CAARS) Assessment. Purpose and Nature of the Instrument Stated purpose: CAARS is
a comprehensive instrument designed to "assess, diagnose and monitor" ADHD treatment in an adult population, ages 18 years and older (Conners, Erhardt and Sparrow, 1999). Its purposes extend beyond the
scope of diagnosis and assessment, as the CAARS also aids in treatment of the disorder. Description of test, items and scoring: CAARS utilizes both self and informant report and
consists of 42 items that are listed in 4 subscales, and 18 DSM-IV items augment them, with symptom frequency rated on a 4 point Likert scale (Taylor, Deb and
Unwin, 2011). The instrument takes between 10 and 30 minutes to administer. Available in short, long or a screening version. Items on CAARS have been gleaned from a pool of
93 items that are considered to be associated with ADHD in adults (Knouse and Safren, 2010). The final 66 items, which comprise the scale, were selected carefully based on the
exploratory factor analysis conducted by the developers (Knouse and Safren, 2010). Use in counseling: CAARS is useful in a number of clinical settings, as it can be used in
research, correctional or rehabilitation settings in order to "identify, assess and treat" adults in regards to all symptoms and behaviors associated with ADHD (Conners, Erhardt and Sparrow, 1999, p. 1).
