Conjoined twins who do survive into adulthood can go on to have children, hold jobs, and lead fulfilling lives. This paper discusses the ethical dilemmas surrounding the issue of separating conjoined twins. Ethical Dilemma Identified There is a great deal of debate about whether or not it is ethical to separate conjoined twins. The question becomes acute in those instances in which separation will condemn one twin to death, and this is likely to happen in the majority of cases. Basically, the two sides of the debate seem to be that it is wrong to take a life under any circumstances, versus the idea that a life such as most conjoined twins are forced to lead is so diminished that separation is desirable, no matter what the risk. The issue becomes even more complicated because most separations have been failures, and both twins have died. The issues in this heart wrenching debate can be explored more easily if we consider an actual case, that of Jodie and Mary. Both Sides of the Debate In 2000, their parents brought Jodie and Mary, conjoined twins, to Britain for medical assessment (Smith, 2000). Doctors determined that without surgery both twins would die, but separating them would mean that Mary, who was dependent on Jodie for survival, would die (Smith, 2000).
