of a number of problems, including: * The arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed (American Heart Association, 2007). * The individual had a heart attack within resultant
scar tissue that will interfere with the normal functions of the heart muscle (American Heart Association, 2007). * High blood pressure (American Heart Association, 2007). * A disease, such as
rheumatic fever, resulted in heart valve disease (American Heart Association, 2007). * Congenital heart defects, i.e., the infant was born with heart defects (American Heart Association, 2007). * The heart
valves or the heart muscle itself is infected, called endocarditis and/or myocarditis (American Heart Association, 2007). When the flow of blood out of the heart glows down, the blood coming
through the veins back into the heart gets backed up, which causes congestion (American Heart Association, 2007). The legs and/or ankles or "other parts of the body" may become swollen,
i.e., edema (American Heart Association, 2007). The fluid generally collects in the lungs, thereby, causing breathing problems like "shortness of breath" (American Heart Association, 2007). Kidney problems may result because
the kidneys are not capable of disposing "sodium and water" (American Heart Association, 2007); this is what cases the edema (American Heart Association, 2007). Diagnosis is based on the results
listed above, particularly on the swelling and breathing problems (American Heart Association, 2007). Because of the buildup of water, the individual may also have a sudden increase in their weight
