Discussion Confucius is "one of the most influential philosophers in the Eastern tradition" (Hayden). He held several government posts in addition to developing his own school of thought, and developed
"an enduring reputation as a sage with a deep love of wisdom and virtue" (Hayden). The "core idea" of Confucius philosophy is "benevolence," which is generally considered to be "the
performance of li, which refers to rituals of etiquette or propriety between human beings, including behavior of mutual respect and civility that government officials should cultivate within themselves" (Hayden).
Confucius taught "that government should be benevolent" but he also placed great emphasis on the "demand of obedience" (Hayden). Confucius taught that everyone in a "virtuous state" (meaning a benevolent
government) has "a duty to contribute to its unity and harmony" (Hayden). Believing this, Confucius would not then have advocated things like todays struggles for civil rights or human rights
or other policies that place the individuals well-being above that of the nation (Hayden). Its probably fair to say that he would have been completely out of sympathy with things
like the Womens Movement and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. In the Analects, Confucius said this about government: "When those who are in high stations perform well
all their duties to their relations, the people are aroused to virtue. When old friends are not neglected by them, the people are preserved from meanness" (Confucius). Later in Book
8, he says "When a country is well governed, poverty and a mean condition are things to be ashamed of. When a country is ill governed, riches and honor are
