social interaction, and television is the primary source of information and family activity. As the novel opens, there is no semblance of individuality anywhere. Protagonist Guy Montag is a fireman, which means he starts fires rather than extinguishes them. Books are the enemy of this futuristic society, and his primary vocation is to maintain the status quo by burning them. He is pleased with his civic duty, and boasts of his tasks, "It was a pleasure to burn" (Bradbury 3). The title Fahrenheit 451 is a reference to the burning point of paper used in books, which is 451 degrees Fahrenheit. Montag is married to Mildred and they have no children. They take great delight in their social conformity, and neither would be able to understand a book if they bothered an attempt at reading. But one day, Montag crosses paths with a beautiful individual named Clarisse McClellan who shows him everything he has been missing. She appreciates the moment and delights in asking questions about love, life, and contentment. After learning what he does for a living, Clarisse inquires, "Do you ever read any of the books you burn?" (Bradbury 9) No, Montag, admits, because books are illegal, but her question unnerves him to the point that he tells her, "You think too many things" (Bradbury 9). Clarisse points out the difference between conformity and individuality in this drab existence when she observes, "People dont talk about anything... they all say the same things and nobody says anything different from anyone else" (Bradbury 31).
