Indeed, in the early part of the 1900s, not only was there the First World War, but also, there was the advent and promise of communism. People embraced Marxism and
saw it as a solution for the problems that plagued man. Of course, the social class divide has been a problem for centuries, but in the latter part of the
nineteenth century, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels introduced a plan. This plan was thought to be pure genius by many, but when trying to implement the plan, there were problems.
The United States would come to see Marxism as an enemy to freedom and democracy. Indeed, Marx theorized that one would have to give up some autonomy in order to
live happily ever after. Still, if it would quell alienation and mans suffering, it was worthwhile. At least, that is true according to Marx. Many leaders around the world agreed
with that assessment, but the leaders of the free world did not. The tug of war between communists and capitalists set off an unprecedented "cold war." Of course, the cold
war would begin much later than would the mini-revolutions that would invite communist ideology. As the twentieth century began, the 1917 Russian Revolution-and the movements even before that date-is
considered relevant to the rest of the century. Russia would come into its own and by the time half the century passed, there would be a cold war, largely between
Russia and the United States. In fact, during the middle of the twentieth century, Russia was so powerful, that it actually rivaled the United States. There were fears of nuclear
