"Iliad" and Euripides play "Medea." In "Medea," the conflict lies between Medea and her husband Jason, who has divorced her, so that he can make a politically more advantageous marriage, which is to the daughter of Creon, the "lord of this land" (Euripides). In the nurses opening monologue she gives the background exposition that is necessary to understand the depth of Medeas grief, reminding the audience that Medea aided Jason in his quest to bring back the Golden Fleece. In doing so, she went against her own father and family. She gave up everything in the world that she had known in order to go with Jason and be his wife. The nurse says that Medea has appealed to Jason, reminding him of the "oaths he swore" and the "strong pledge his right hand gave" (Euripides). As she fasts, cries and grieves, she "bemoans her father dear, her country and her home which she gave up" (Euripides). The nurses speech clearly shows that the Euripides intended the sympathy of the audience to be with Medea, who is so extreme in her misery that Creon, Jasons new father-in-law, fears that she will enact revenge and banishes her and her children from the city. Medea pleads with Creon for one more day and this is granted. Jason lamely agues that his abandonment of her and their children is for the best. After formulating her plans, Medea pretends to see his point and offers a coronet and a dress as gifts to the new wife. As Medea is an accomplished sorceress and related to the gods, she has poisoned the gifts and on donning them the new wife dies immediately. In his grief, Creon embraces her, absorbs the poison and dies also. After culminating her revenge by murdering the small ...
