examples, especially in research, where ethics has been abandoned in the hope of achieving some sort of breakthrough. This paper considers the conflict that can arise between medical research and
medical ethics using the Tuskegee Institute study as its basis. Discussion The Tuskegee Experiment, as it is usually known, is horrifying. Its bad enough on its own, but its effects
continue to this day, often taking the form of African-American distrust of the medical community, which in turn means they are underserved and suffer needlessly because of the callousness-not to
mention lethal-effects of this ill-conceived and barbaric experiment. In brief, the Tuskegee Experiment was an attempt to investigate the "succession of phases syphilis exhibits when left to itself, uncomplicated by
other morbid processes and unmolested by active treatment" (Tuskegee syphilis study). The important phrases here are "left to itself" and "uncomplicated by ... active treatment." In other words, the researchers
wanted to know how syphilis acted in an infected person who was not treated for the disease in any way. To find that out, they recruited 600 African-American men, 399
infected with syphilis and 201 without the disease, for a study (Tuskegee syphilis study). The study was conducted over a 40 year period; during this time the men were
