is inevitable. Usually, when problems crop up negotiation is key to resolution. After all, businesses cannot merely let employees go because of small mishaps. At the same time, they cannot
tolerate large mistakes or an ineffective performance. In a health care facility, performance is vital because small mistakes can mean higher morbidity or mortality rates and in the delicate field
of nurturing the elderly, quality is critical to the sustenance of human life. Many different conflict and negotiation issues are possible at a long term care facility such as
a nursing home. Some examples will be used to demonstrate how nursing home management may effectively resolve inevitable problems. The first problem relates to working conditions. Many are familiar with
ergonomic difficulties for computer keyboard operators in todays society. Yet, people who work in the helping professions have ergonomic issues as well.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 1998 there had been 1,730,500 lost-time occupational injuries in the United States and 44% involved strains and sprains, with most involving
the back (Fragala 22). Of that number 10.5% of back injuries experienced in the United States were caused by assisting and moving patients in healthcare settings (22). The list
shows that nurses aides, orderlies and attendants were most vulnerable (22). Further, within nursing facilities, the incidence of injuries that emanated from overexertion and also mostly due to overexertion
