result in some type of conflict. Conflict can erupt even among close family members and friends. It can also erupt between complete strangers. Conflicts differ according to the individuals involved. In school-age children, for example, friction can involve conflicts between boyfriends and girlfriends, conflicts resulting from rumors and gossip, conflicts between parents and their children, conflicts between brothers and sisters, conflicts regarding jealousy, trust, responsibility, and peer pressure. In adults conflict can center around similar situations or perhaps around conflicts in the workplace or other places where adults spend a percentage of their time. The nursing environment in particular can breed conflict. It becomes the job not only of administrators and managers, however, to resolve this conflict, it is also the job of the nurse themselves. Definitions Conflict in the nursing environment is a very real issue and one which distracts from the well being of people in general. Mental health an often even physical health is affected as is the productivity of the health care delivery system. What results is a deleterious impact to patient welfare. With appropriate conflict resolution skills, however, most conflict can be either avoided or mediated. Purnell (1999) relates the results of one study which identified conflict management as one of the primary responsibilities of health care managers and administrators. Galvin (1998) concurs with this observation.
