is a natural component of all human interaction. Conflict can erupt even among close family members and friends. It can also erupt between complete strangers. The workplace,
however, has special conditions and considerations which make resolving conflict imperative. With appropriate conflict resolution skills, however, most conflict can be either avoided or mediated. This process is
particularly aided through the use of the team approach. Conflict can become an element in practically any work situation but the team approach
allows that conflict to be minimized and more easily dealt with when it does erupt. Typically those individuals who work together to use problem solving strategies such as confrontation,
compromise or yielding, in conflict resolution have a better overall relationship than do those individuals who utilize other strategies. Dove (1998, PG) specifies that conflict occurs on four levels:
"(1) intrapersonal conflict refers to internal struggles within an individual to clarify values or wants;
(2) interpersonal conflict arises when two or more individuals exhibit contrasting values, goals or beliefs;
(3) intragroup conflict occurs within a group; and (4) intergroup conflict arises between two or more groups of people, departments or
organizations with contradictory beliefs or needs". At each of these levels specific conflict resolution skills
must be employed to effectively overcome the problem. Communication thus becomes an important part of the process. It is though effective communication that an employer can accomplish employee
