those conflicts, which have been summarised as the strategist, the conflict researcher and the peace researcher (Groom, 1988). They all look at finding ways to get around the issues of
conflict in order to create peace, but each takes a different approach. When looking at the way conflict impacts not only on the nation states or parties involved it is
possible to make a strong argument that whichever approach is adopted that there is a potential benefit if those involved in the conflict receive outside help in order to find
a way to peace (Ryan, 2003). Taking this to a more extreme level it has been argued that "International conflicts should be handled in a co-operative spirit by all
countries, big, small, on an equal basis". Of all the approaches that may be adopted we can argue that the most difficult, but one that may hold the
highest level of potential is that of the peace approach developed by Johan Galtung. Within this approach there is a different view taken of peace and the way it is
which it is achieved, and it is possible influenced by the Galtungs own experience, who as a twelve year old boy saw his father arrested by the Nazis when they
occupied Norway and when on to become a committed pacifist. This places an interesting approach on the way that peace can be attainted and maintained, but it is also an
approach that can be seen as taking an holistic view, with peace being the responsibility of nations and it does not hold that conflict has to be violent, following the
