such a way as to encourage them to participate; sometimes they find it on their own. But no matter why they come to a decision to accept God, it can
be joyous or it can be a situation fraught with conflict. In such a situation there are probably surface issues such as when and where to attend church, and underlying
issues that go directly to the heart of religious experience, such as how much and what can one believe? What sort of conflict resolution can one apply to the questions
that arise in this context? One source suggests that prayers are actually requests for advice, including the interpretation of moral principles or for "revelation about making a judgement or choice"
(Thorngate, 2005). Looked at in this light, prayers are "a type of decision procedures, one worthy of psychological investigation" (Thorngate, 2005). While secular people no doubt shudder at the idea,
its likely that a great many people pray for guidance and accept what they feel is literally the answer to a prayer when they make decisions (Thorngate, 2005). Because prayers
"probably influence a greater number of important decisions than do statistical projects, opinion polls, consultants reports or even ... journal articles" its important to study their role in decision making
(Thorngate, 2005). From there, we can consider how this can lead to conflict and a need for resolution. At times, a prayer for guidance, or "a series of them"
