there is no established way to resolve differences of opinion. Gerardi and Morrison (2005) reported that "nurses spend an average of 6 hours a day just managing hassles" (p. 31).
That is an enormous amount of time that is actually wasted and that causes nurses more stress than they already feel. Gorton (2005) explains that most conflicts are the
result of unclear communication. People misinterpret what other people mean or what their intentions are (Gorton, 2005). The same author tells us that conflict often "arises from a clash of
perspectives about multifaceted issues" (Gorton, 2005). Those different perspectives are based on needs and expectations of each person involved in the conflict (Gorton, 2005). According to Gerardi and Morrison (2005),
there are three large categories of conflicts: those based on rights, those based on interests and those based on values. Issues involving rights are most often based on some sort

are very difficult to resolve; people will seldom change their values (Gerardi and Morrison, 2005). The only solution is for people with different values to find a way to work
together harmoniously. Regardless of the type of conflict, it needs to be resolved for a healthier work environment and in the health care setting, resolution will increase the quality of
patient care (Gerardi and Morrison, 2005). Mediation is one way to resolve conflicts in a positive framework (Gerardi and Morrison, 2005; Gorton, 2005; Vogtmann, 2002). Gorton (2005) explains that mediation
